I am not worried about reliability problems, I have read that this quad has been in the making for 5 years. However, I will wait b/c I don't have the money right now and other projects need to be finished before I buy another quad. Also I still want a Banshee, but I think the yfz 450 may work better in the places I have to ride.......... to bad I can't buy both

Think about it, the raptor engine was a completly new one but the YFZ one has been proved to be powerful and reliable in the dirt Bike.

no, the raptor engine isn't completely new, it came from a road bike over in europe, and this is why the gears dont hold up in a quad. Although I wouldent trust the yzf to much, because they de-stroked it, probably changed gear ratios, and definatly lowered the comp ratio, all of these thinghs could potentialy have problems that the origional bike diden't. Anyways, All you guys that say i'll take the chance, obviosly you never bought an 01' raptor, ya know?

The Raptor engine was PROVEN in a street bike frame....for years. In a quad frame was a different story for the 01 Raptor. I have read that the gears were stronger for the YFZ quad application though. The YFZ engine could still have major problems in a quad chassis....and Yamaha will not stand behind these potential problems.

Haven't some racers been using this very same engine for at least two years?

Road proven and Dirt proven are to very different things. The 450 Is already dirt proven. Thats good enough for me.

Just a new application. There will obviously be teething problems.
I would buy an 04, but not before the bike has been on the market for at least 6 months.

Tore into my wife's 03 Raptor last friday (putting a 686 in it.)

Printed out directions from (Raptor Tranny) to help with the top end since I had not torn into this particular engine before. (Only used the directions for top end removal but, Two Thumbs Up in my book.)

Let me say this about the 01 to the 03. . . anything that he ran into as an issue has been corrected on the 03.

It doesn't have to be a major component like a tranny it can be something as annoying as a bad seal on a carb boot but, most of the little issues are worked out after the first year. (This holds true for the DS as well, just annoying little stuff.)

Hello,

The 660 motor has been in a Tenere streetbike with off-road capabilities since 1991. The 450 engine is only here since 2002. They now produce a lot more HP with less cc and less weight. The 660 is an old motor with old technologie !
