Need Raptor help ASAP- Loud Starter/Engine Noise!!
Thanks guys for the tips. I was a little scared to do the work myself. I have never seen inside the engine or the covers before and I didn't really know what to expect. Also, I didn't know that I can rent a flywheel puller. That is good info for the future. I already took it into the dealer this morning so I will let them do it this time, but if it happens again I will surely do it myself.
BTW, the mechanic knew right away what the noise was, he said he has already replaced about 3 of them this spring.

Kraw all years have this problems, actually, believe it or not the 01's have a needle bearing which is a much more better design than the 02 and up. Yamaha removed the needle bearing to wave expensises

I friend of mine's one way went this week, and we're tearing it apart this weekend, not a hard job to do, but it is his second one. He figures he'll wait for the L&A Designs model since he just had knee surgery and is out till at least September. Mine hasn't gone yet, but I have that feeling that it's going to happen sooner or later.

This subject has been beat too death....almost as bad as recommending a pipe for the Raptor. Do a search on the subject. The bad part is debree floating around in your engine from the 1-way spring. This will lead too premature engine wear.

Gary is right, for the most part the metal sticks to the magnetic flywheel but I am sure some gets away from it and makes its way to the engine
Mine clunked a couple times, then freewheeled a couple times on one ride. After that it was good for a year but making clunking noise.
