Valve Adjustment on Wolverine
Does anyone know how to do this? My quad is fairly new and I want to check the valves. What should I look for , and how hard of a process is adjusting valves? Should i have a mechanic do it or should i do it myself? Thanks

Setting the valves isn't real hard, just taking off the front bumper, fenders, and gas tank to get at the valves take a little time. Pull the spark plug and take the 2 plastic threaded covers off the left side of the motor, the big one on the side of the case, and the little one just above it. use a big flat screwdriver,or something that fits the slot tight to prevent chipping the edges. Then you can rotate the motor with a metric socket (tap the starter to make sure you are rotating it the right way) to line up the timing marks in the little hole on top. You will see a T and an F mark,I'm pretty sure you line up the T to put it at TDC,you should verify by having a finger on the sparkplug hole to see if it is pushing a lot of air out,for the compression stroke. If you have the covers off the the valves (metric allen wrenches) you will see the rockers moving a pushing on the valve stems. When you are at TDC on the compression stroke, both rockers will be up, and not compressing the springs on the valves. Each rocker tip has a locknut and an adjustable rod in it,you will need a metric wrench (8 or 10 mm) to loosen the locknut. Then use a needle nose to adjust the gap from the rocker to the valve stem, intake is .006, and the exhaust is .004 . Hold the adjustment tip steady while you tighten the locking nut, then rotate the motor all the way around back to TDC, and recheck the results. I may have missed a step or 2,it's been a while since I had to set my valves, they seem to stay set real well for me. Hope this helps, getting a manual for your quad wouldn't be a bad idea, lots of useful information in there.

Hey 95wolv my carb is acting funny! I got that prodesign intake for it with a foam filter, it pulls alot more air now! I also jetted it up to compensate, I went from a 141 main to a 145. I went and opened it up, got up to full throttle it just died shut off , but it started right back up ran fine till full throttle then did the same thing started it back up. Do you think im draining the bowl, bad gas, dirt in it what the hell is going on or do I need to jet higher?

slowride,
Yamaha changed the carb on the Wolverine after the first year (95), because of carburation problems a lot of people were complaining about. They went from a flat slide to a cv type, and I am not real familiar with the cv type. From the sound of it, you may be running out of fuel, check the float level, you may have bumped it while rejetting. Or maybe you need to play with the needle position, you could be running real lean on the top end,but that shouldn't kill it,just drop power. Does it surge or miss before it dies? hopefully that will give you a few things to look at. Also -- Spike, I may have reversed the specs on the valve gap settings, call your shop to verify before you tear into it !! You also didn't mention why you were checking valves- excessive noise, or running badly? The first checkup might even be covered by the dealer, if you tell him of any concerns.

Thanks for the info 95wolv. It runs fine, but I was just wondering if I should check it or not. I heard that they are supposed to be adjusted after the breakin period, but my machine runs good. I probably shouldn't even mess with it though since it runs fine. Thanks
