New Wolv Ticking
#1
I just picked up my new 03 Wolverine today and started to break the engine in. I'm starting to get some ticking noises coming from the engine. I hanv't got into it hard, or kept the throttle in one postion for long. Is this normal during the break in period for a four stroke? This is my first new fourstroke, I've previously only had two strokes brand new from the dealer. BTW, this quad rocks! I used to have a Timberwolf 4x4 and wrote all 4x4 ATVs off after having that. Then I started reading about how sporty the Wolv was and decided to take a chance on it. Boy, am I glad I did.

Does it do this when the engine is running? If it does it could be valves,Cam or something up top. If it does it while its sitting I was told it's nothing to worry about that parts just have a different rate of cooling.

You can check the the valves pretty easy, just take off the valve cover with the engine at TDC and slip a feeler guage between the rocker and the top of the valve spring thing. You will always be able to hear them a little with an air cooled 4 stroke. Also, for some reason all warrior engines tick. Everyone thinks they are going to blow up any second till the realize everyone elses makes the same noise and some of them are still running after many many years.

I have an 03 warrior most likely with the same tick - gets worse the hotter the engine gets and started during break in. Dealer reset the cam chain tensioner at first service. I haven't run it long enough since the service(just got it warm) but it sounds better.

Thanks for the replies. I feel better knowing that other people have the same noises. It started during break in and gets worse when the engine gets hotter. I'll mention it during the first service.
