1st service ???
#1
I was told by the dealer to bring my 450 Kodiak in after I ran about 5 or 6 tanks of gas through it, I asked him what they do for the first service and if it was something I could do (like just change the oil and filter) but he just kind of blew the question off and told me to bring it in and it would be around a $100 to do. What do they do for a hundred bucks? or what should they do for the 1st service?? Is it something I can do?
Thanks for the info...

I'm not sure about the 4x4's, but for sport atvs, after about 2-4 gas tanks (10-20 hours), it needs an oil & filter change. The chain should be tightened/loosened/lubed as needed. On brand new bikes, during the first 10-20 hours smalls bits of metal will be in the oil pan from the gears, clutch, etc. breaking in.
That's all they'll do.

Yeah they told me the same thing. It cost me around 120 bucks and really I think its a ripoff. All they did was change my oil, filter and spark plug. They also re-tighten all the bolts because they really get loose on a new bike during the break in. It would probably run you about 20 dollars to do yourself. The one thing to keep in mind is that if you dont take it to them to do it, the manf warr is voided, but its allright since they only got your back for six months. You should do it yourself that way you get to know your bike, you know do some bonding.
Its called the Yamaha 72 hour service....It took them 2 hours to do it on my bike...

change your oil and filter
check and clean your air filter
check and lube your chain
check coolant level
check your plug
greese your zerts
check and tighten all bolts
if valves are ticking adjust them (probably fine)
pack a lunch and go riding

The most costly thing about the first service is having the valves adjusted.....and this is a must for engine longevity. You really need too learn how too adjust your valves so you can check them periodically....instead of the underpaid boy that could care less if he adjusts your valves correct.

Thanks for the info...
Do the valves on these quads really need to be check after only a few tanks of gas? My Honda CBR929RR doesn't call for a valve check until 16 or 18,000 miles and most people I talk to who had it done then said they were spot on.
Would I be safe just changing the oil/filter and cleaning the air filter and waiting awhile before I have the valves checked?

Take BlueLeaders advice, I did the first service myself, no problem, second service checked the valves, they were fine. At the dealer they basically do oil and filter change, look at the valves, stand back and say, yeah they look fine to me, then charge you $120.00, even though it only took them 30mins. I believe the first service is a flat rate, I think they believe you have no ideal how long things take back in their shop so they gouge you.
