Default Which paddles should I get?

Well..as some of you may know..Im a noob to the whole ATV world. Anyhow..I wanna purchase my first mod..which is some paddles and polished rims. However...I am hearing different things..and confused as to which set I should get. I was gonna get the paddles where there just straight lines along the tires..however my friend is telling me that I should get the V style pattern paddles...for better handling. What do you guys recommend..and what size and specs and brand.

Thanks so much..you guys have been much help!

What type of riding do you like to do? If you like to mostly mess around and trail ride with a little drag racing here and there, I would reccomend the Sand Tires Unlimited Sand Skate Two's in a 20-10-10 on a .160 or .125 rim. If you like to mostly drag race with a little trail riding and messing around on the side, I would reccomend the Skat Trak extreme hauler. The difference between the regular and extreme haulers is that the extremes have kevlar in the paddle and are much more durable. I would get them in a 20-10-10 or 21-12-8 or 22-12-8 8 paddle. You can order either from www.rockymountainatv.com but, who knows, you may be able to find a better price somewhere else. Also, dabeechman knows alot about paddles, so you may want to ask him. Hope this helps, and happy riding.

I linked a sand tire shootout in a couple threads and I'll see if I can locate it again and put it here. One piece of info to help you decide between v-paddle and straight paddle though. V-paddles move less sand but at a more consistant rate thus making them more predictable. Straight paddles get you going in a straight line way faster but turning isn't as smooth. I've had Sand Skate II's (v-paddle) and Hauler Extreme's on my raptor and I like the Haulers better. When your going up a treeshot and you have to side-hill or go downhill a little to clear an obstacle the haulers will hook up and get you headed back up the hill but the Skates just dug holes. I'm running 20x10x10 9 paddle Hauler Extremes now and I can side hill pretty much anything I want and come out of just about any treeshot I want so I'm happy with the tire, just need a little more power.

Good tires for sand/mud/trail riding are ITP Spider Tracs.... hands down!
If you don't go with Spider Tracs then just make sure the tires you get are at least 4 ply.

I ordered my Spider Tracs from World Class, they have a listing in the magazine ATV Action. At least that's where I've seen them.
The combo for a pair of Spider Tracs mounted on steel rims is $169.95 for the size I got (22x12.5x8). The s/h was $20.

As far as the size. To be on the safe side, stick with same size as stock for the rim.
You might not want to go more than an inch or 2 bigger than stock for the tire.

I;m guessing that you ride a Banshee. I have an 03 and before I bought paddles for it I asked a friend of mine that has ridden banshees for a long time. He told me a 8 paddle hauler for a piped and jetted Banshee is a good tire for every where. I bought 20x10x8 8 paddle haulers and love them they fit the bike and my riding style perfectly. So thats my Rec.

There was an article about this as Treshot mentioned. The fall out/outcome of it was that the straight paddles were only slightly faster up hills than the angled paddles. From what I remember the difference was pretty small. On the other hand, the over all handling & sliding was better with the Angled paddles. I have the Skate II's on my Banshee and love the handling and they hook-up just fine. If all I did was going to do was race up hills, I'd have a set of straight paddles as that's were they excel.

The Sand Skate IIs are the ultimate tire for a Banshee. The Sand Shark is a less expensive alternative that is a little heavier, but is very good. Go with the 20x11x10. I have been riding on the .125 aluminum for 5 years with no problems, but if you plan on jumping or weigh over 200#, you should get the .160. There is little difference in the price, so the .160 may be the safer choice.
