Default What do you use to clean the oil filter element?

I'm a first year quad owner (warrior) and am about to change the oil, when I consulted the manual it mentioned cleaning the oil filter element instead of replacing it. The manual said to use solvent but after checking with the cycle/quad dealer and an auto parts store, no one carries an actual solvent. The guy at the auto parts store talked me into buying a spray can of brake cleaner saying it would work just fine since its designed not to leave any residue. What do you guys think? I should have asked here first but want to know peoples experiences before I try something that may have an adverse effect on my quad.

brake clean works good. so does kerosene as in a parts washer. just spray from the inside out and blow it dry with air when you're done.
