The Garmin Etrex Vista has a digital compass and baro altimeter built in - great features. Without a compass, you must be moving to derive a course to the target. With a compass, the unit can "point" in the proper direction of the target while standing still. Also, you have constant situational awareness as far as direction when ya stop - cant do that without a compass - it's worth the extra $$.

I almost bought the magellan merridian because of the smart media card option until one of my students told me he returned one cause it made his pants drop even lower. thus for the size option I chose the etrex legend. It is not expandable but does come with a pretty respectable base map built in plus the option to add more maps. I also like that It comes with the cable to download to pc. After each ride I save the tracks onto my laptop so I do not ever use anymore than 3% of the memory. Then when I want to use the tracks again I just send them back to the legend unit via laptop.
I alst really like the one handed usability of the etrex.
Hope that helped
