THis is what i wrote on which quad is best for me... in the yamaha form
THe yfz is a race bike. anf the rap will do alot very well. A z400 or 400ex has great power for a new guy. U want a under powerd quad that does to handle well to start on. If you get the best to start with you will never become a good rider. I rode a honda 185 atc with no shocks for year and i learnd to carrie my speed and pick the right lines along with being smoth. good luck but start with a 400 and they cant be built up easly down the road
Now lets all stop. he is a 1st time rider!!!! if we tell him to get a race bike one of two things will happen. he will be out riding and he will get hurt bc the bike will jump out from under him and loop out or punch a tree. or he will feel fine but will never become a good rider bc he never had to work a bike to the top, pick the right lines, or be smoth in a turn. We all know what these bikes do well but lets not hurt the guy!!! I would say to get a Z400 or 400ex. They are tame to let you learn to ride 1st and then he could add mods or step up to the yfz or rap. b]he needs to walk before he can run!!!
Hey dude more power to you if u want the YFZ i should be getting 1 in the next week or so.
But please dont get in this idea that bigger is better. The bike will do the ridding and u will be sitting on it. Ur learning curve will be alot bigger if you get a "wifes" bike and get your skills down. and get to the point to when you can toss the bike around. the 1st time that yfz comes up and loops out u will alway have a thought in the back of your mind and be aferaid of it. and new riders never look as far as they should. you will be on a fast bike and get your self in a spot and will not be able to pull out and get hurt. you and buy a 400 (both are great bikes and you can do alot to them down the road) and sell it and not lose any money. my buddy just sold his 02 ex and only lost $300 on it. after u get your own bike you will see what i am sayn.
just trust me on this when u get what ever bike u get u will know what i am sayn. you need to walk before you can run
.
I hope all this helps i think all riders should start out on a under powerd bike to hone the skills that are needed to ride a "big" bike

I don't think it would hurt anything..........
all he would have to do is just take all of the other people's advice that have written on this thread
take it slow at first and work your way up.........
it is as simple as that..........
and the dealer is required to offer u a atv safety course.....they will teach him how to drive it there.......

He should definately get the YFZ and just turn the throttle limiter screw in all the way
until he has a good 30 to 40 hours on it. The throttle limiter will restrict the speed
while he develops his riding skills.. You could buy a poor handling quad and get hurt
much quicker then the YFZ with good handling traits.
BTW, this was my first quad and the third time out I was practicing with pro class
riders. However I raced moto-cross for a number of years when I was younger.
