that seems hard to believe that they make you break the chain. If this is the case, I will probably leave the chain as it seems to me it would be stronger with out the master link.

How else you plan to deal w/ it?

I've got tons of hours on "master linked" chains (some have multiple masters) and have had no issues. The actual clip that holds the master link on provides very little structural support - it's not needed in that direction.

Once you've broken and played with just a couple, you'll be a chain pro. Always have some extra chain (o-ring and non) and a few extra masters for each about.
