Raptor '01 tranny, what causes problems?

I still believe that this problem is just caused by the three dog system. I still run an org. tranny on my 01 Stage 2 686 with no probs. Maybe I am lucky but maybe it will crater tommorrow. Who knows?! Anyway, I DON'T believe the theory of rev causing the failures or of the crank being out of specs. As far as the accusations of the 02 trannies killing rods when installed on these "out of spec" cranks, look at who's blowing rods... It's only the guys pushing these engines to the max who have paper thin cylinders running 727's with 12:1 compression with 110 race fuel. That's alot of bang and you have to expect some stock parts not to be able to handle it. Course, this is all just my opinion.

I Have one of the 1st Raptors sold in CA: I think there may be few different thing happening with the 01's. One is 1st & 2nd gears are too high! putting too much stran on parts. I have had no probs. but I changed to an 11/ on the front. Aiso " Parts are not parts". I'm not sure that all parts are made exactly of the same grade materials every day; remember this is a third world country. I also think some guys just don't know how to ride......

Yamaha takes an overseas street bike engine and bolts it directly in the Raptor frame with NO CHANGES but reverse. Now, the engine has a gear sliding back and forth in a transmission that was not designed for Reverse. When you down an 01 Raptor that lunched a tranny, at least one of the broken dogs is rounded.....this is from moving back and forth grinding back in place every time reverse is used. Four dogs would last longer using reverse.....but it would still fail eventually if using reverse without redesigning a gear set that incorporates reverse....ie 02 gear set. The 01 gear set is faster because it utilizes torque more efficient with the taller ratios.

A properly designed gearset will never "grind in"....this is what rounds the dogs and ultimately results in failure on the 01 gearset. You may hear some engagement noise......but should not get grinding....think about it, if all trannys were grinding into gear they would certainly have too eventually fail.
