Default Raptor '01 tranny, what causes problems?

Well I know mine finally went back in June on my 01... Thought I might have been one of the lucky ones. Got a full rebuild from the dealer under warrenty on it. They said they put in the "Upgraded Shift Forks" and also said it should not happend again. So we will see I guess.

Default Raptor '01 tranny, what causes problems?

... The old old debated subkect of why the '01 tranny had failures. Many people say its the 3 dogs and in my opinion they are just naive and just say what others have said, and there is also the reverse thingy, it could play a part in it but I use reverse constantly and still run my '01 with a charm. But what many just look over and will comment on this, it was all a mass production problem, machines go out of spec and when someone gets lazy it will be way off. All the align bored parts of the cases were off (this is also my opinion of how all the '02 tranny '01 raptors with a cam and piston, rods failed). Sure the three dogs break but would it be better for the gears to break or the whole case be destroyed? This is my opinion on this, so lets be civilized and have knowledgeable responses...

Nice post. Please elaborate on the rods failing if you could. Thanks.

If you have noticed on any of these rod failures, they all consist of '01 bikes with the '02 tranny upgrade.. (not saying all the bikes because there are a selected few that still go, but who knows how long) Like I said before in the align bore process not all of them are correct, so if you think about it, if the crankshaft is off just beyond the tolerences it could offset the rod. And in all the pics ive seen the small end of the rod broke and caused a chain of other breakings. All at an angle that could be cause by the rod leaning to far to on side. People also blamed those failures on weak rod (but every rod has a point of to much), lean mixture (no bluing of any parts so no), and compression (could be but the way they broke makes it doubtful).

Hmmm. I will have it checked when I build my motor. I am getting a carillo rod and getting the crank rebalanced so I"ll tell them to check that too, I am sure they will on their own though.

Yeah its always good to check the crap.. I put in a JE 10.75:1 piston and HC Stage 1 cam last january on my '01 motor/tranny/rod and I have no problems. You just seem to see these with the '02 updates.

If the tolerances between the 01tranny were fine, but with the 02 tranny in the 01 raptor weren't, how would you tell if it would be ok to put the 02 tranny in before putting it in? I mean the 02 tranny won't be installed until after the engine is back together and at that point is too late...Do you understand what I mean?
