Help with 02' 400 Big Bear
#1
My ATV had been in storage the last 8 months. When I started it, it wouldn't idle and would back fire unless I had the choke on. Then it back fired and I can't get it to start at all now. Any ideas?

Hello,
I have the same problem. I have a '01 Big Bear 400 4x4 and one day it was fine, and when I went to ride a couple days later it would not run. When I have the choke on it runs but back fires like crazy. I cleaned my carb twice and it still doesn't run right. I was wondering if you had any luck with yours. Thank you.

This is the weirdest thing. I had mine in storage as well and pulled it out two weeks ago and had a hard time getting it to run. Finally it started so I left it on choke for about five minutes to run the engine then rode it for about an hour real lightly to break it in again and it would not run real well unless I put choke on. And even then it would backfire. I parked it and it hasn't started since. I was thinking i burned up the motor but after reading yalls post I'm thinking it might just need a good cleaning and a tune up. It always had problems running, it wouldn't idle when cold and when warm it would over rev. The damn yamaha shop said to let it break-in and now I'm having this problem. How much should I expect to pay the shop to clean and get it running right if it just needs adjustments. I can work on cars but I have never worked on one of these. If I knew where the screws are to adjust the carb I would attempt myself.

These carb aren't that hard to clean out. If it ran right before you parked it shouldn't need adjusted. Just take the float bowl off the bottom and spray some carb cleaner thru the jets and needle valve this usually helps.

I tried cleaning it and it didn't help. Still won't start. Thought about taking it in to have it and having Yamaha do it. (But fear what they might charge)!!!

Well I'm going to change te oil, clean the carb and spark plug and see if this will do the trick on mine. I still think I will need to adjust the carb because it has always seemed to not run right since I bought it new. I think it is running to rich. Which way do I turn the adjustment screw to lean it out some?
