Ive gotten my Kodiak to about 54 without any mods...Recently did the KN, rejet and muffler mod, weathers been snowy lately so havent had a chance to open her up. She breaths alot better though. I love this machine.

I got a question for these people who have gotten their Big Bears up to 50 to 55 mph, was it still on the trailer when you were obtaining these incredible speeds? If you want fast buy a Raptor or Banshee not a utility machine, I have the 450 Kodiak and have taken it up to maybe 45, but I did not buy it for that but to haul firewood and the ocassional moose out of the woods.AlaskaBoy.

On the last page of this post I stated I have never had the belt slip but I have finally had it slip on me the last time I took it out riding. I went through a huge puddle I mean it just barely missed going in to the air intake and it was long several hundred feet. I was doing good till about the middle when I noticed all power was lost and I was just sitting there. I was able to barely craw out of it but once I did I opened the drain plug and let all the water flow out, I let it sit for a few minutes after all the water had came out put the plug back in and was able to contiune riding with no problems. I was alittle upset at first but then I realized I knew it had a belt drive and I knew I would not take it in the puddles very often I bought it for trail riding and the puddles I find on most trails never give me a problem so I figure what ever everything has it's good and bad points, and right now even with the belt slipping in the puddle I am still very happy with the machine and would still recommend it to others.

Hey SOox, check to see if you breather hose had come off, remove the right side plastic and look towards the front of the belthousing down low, it is about a 3 inch plastic pipe, it is probaly loose or completly off. Going thru water holes should not fill it up even just a little, you would have to let it sit all night for it to get some water in there. Even if you don't have the gasket in the cover, it will only seep in not fill it. I had the same problem on my 450 Kodiak but it was straight from the dealer that I found this out, it is alittle upkeep thing you need to look for in the future, it is a problem on all the belt driven machines. Remember to add it to your check list after you ride{ you do, do checks on your quad?} and your machine will last along time. AlaskaBoy.

i agree with most everyone, i doubt a stock bb will do 50, but under the right circumstances i could see it, 55 no way you wouldnt have a engine anymore, or would be revving it so high that stuff could start to melt together, also i love the bbs handling, you can slide like nothing in 3rd or 4th

Not a problem. Had a similar problem on my old King Quad, the tube that connects the airbox to the carb had come off on the bottom were you could not see it, going thru water would cause it to die everynow and then. Dealer said it sounded like a electrical problem and the said to take a water hose and check it while running, could not find the problem that way. Was getting ready to tear into the coil and wires when found the hose had slipped off the bottom. {Dealer suggested replaceing the coil}. Turns out the hose some how shrunk and would not stay on{matched it to another one[used} and could see the differnece. Dealer never seen that before and did not have the part in stock said it would be 2 to 3 weeks for delivery, unless I wanted to pay them the fast freight charge of 50 dollars. The part only cost around 20 so I did not see that as an option. Atv Salvage in Eagle River had had one for 5 dollars. In fact this guy stocked just about everything I needed for the King unlike the dealer.AlaskaBoy.

still on the bb topic, my dad has a bb and I have a 00 Kodiak 400 and there is no way the bb can hit even 50 becuase my kodiak can do about 53 and 56 when conditions are right, and when we ride at top speed my kodiak flys by the bb and when we ride side by side, when the bb is at top speed my speedometer says about 46. The only way even a 100 pound person could hit anything over like 50 on a bb is if the bear is falling off a cliff.

I also have a 2002 big bear, the fastest i got it to was 53 mph. the thing sound like it was going to explode! I got it to that speed because i had a 2 mile staightaway (dirt) its called "the highway" and it was in tower city Pa. (www.towercitytrailriders.org) . it was cool out about 56 degrees, and i am 15 years old. i weigh 121 pounds. If your at full throttle it gets up to 45 no problem, but if you keep it at full throttle for about 2-3 minutes it will get to that speed of 53mph, i got to the end of "the highway" and had to stop i dont know if it could of gone any faster. That place in tower city is fun, it is about 15,000 acers and you have to join, or buy a one day pass from these people with no teeth. It is coal mounds, rocks, alot of mud pits, rivers, streams, and alot of other things, just watch out for the endless holes is the ground, that are 5' wide and about 500' deep! But it is possible with the right conditions to get to 53mph, because i have done it, and no it was not on a trailer, it was on level ground.
