I was just wondering why some people use alcohol as gas in some quads? why would you do this? What would it do for your quad?

 

Same reason some guys run Nitrous or build their engines up. It's all about SPEED.

I'm not 100% sure but I'm pretty sure it is because it burns cooler and resist detonation better than pump gas on a highly modified engine. I could be wrong though.[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif[/img]

 

You are 100% correct!!

Advantages for ALKY:

1) Engine runs cooler
2) approx. 10 % gain in power
3) much more forgiving when it comes to jetting(much more)
4) Less expensive than race gas(alot less)
5) my DS wont get on the trailer with my brothers Srambler500 HOE unless its drunk!


Diss-advantages for ALKY

1) less fuel mileage
2) some say you need to "purge" you motor with Gas after every ride. I have been running akly for 2 years,and havent "purged" my motor once9unless I kneww I wasnt going to ride it for months.



For me, the GOOD out weighs the BAD, so I ask YOU!! why dont you run ALKY????

Just a couple more questions though, what would i need to run alcohol, as far as motor mods, or whatever? Does this go the same for two strokes, and would it require a rebuild much quicker running alcohol? Just about how much does alcohol per gallon cost? any help thanks

 

You need nothing to run ALKY, just convert your carb to run it.(larger jets etc.)


On 2 strokes I would suggest you need to purge your system after every ride(cause the used to feul mix to lubricate their cylinders where as 4 strokes dont, they use motor oil. 2 stroke respond VERY well to ALKY!!


Alky can cost as much as 2.50 a gallon, but that is still half what 110 octain race gas costs., but you can find Methonal(same stuff) for around 1.25 pergallon(thats cheaper than 87 octain!!!

I agree with Bigger except for #4. It is cheaper by the gallon, but when you take into considerration that you use twice as much...well 2+2=4 even in Mississippi and OK. LMAO

I pay $3.00 for mine a gallon, but it already has lubemixed in it, takes away a little of the hassle.

There is no difference, alky is just a slang term people use for methanol. The problem with some of the methanol people buy is the percentage it is. I know some guys are buying stuff that is 80% pure methanol, well the other 20% of that is water. I pay about 2 bucks a gallon for 99%, and I'd much rather pay more for no water.
