102mm piston cause starter problems??

It could also be your cam chain is stretched, timing is off, or your one way is getting bad. But check your valves first. The thing with it getting worse when its hot sounds like a tight bore to me.

I just rebuilt my starter motor and it made a hell of a diffference, you can listen to the before and after wav file on my site. Also when my one way was going bad last winter the starter had a hell of a time even on my stock compression motor, My theory is that the one-way was engaging off center on the gear forcing it to bind between the crank and drive gears. It would spin over once then bind on the compression stroke, I could let off and stab the starter button again to start it.

I've got the LA one-way on the shelf just in case mine acts up. So far, haven't had a bit of trouble. My 12:1 686 fires up *immediately*. When I hit the starter button, it's running. Doesn't matter if it's hot or cold. It's unnerving to my buddies with stock engines, all the work in mine and it's the best behaved quad in the group. I had my clutch adjusted a little too loose once and it didn't want to start in gear but as soon as I put another turn on the quick-adjust perch, vroom. Excuse me while I go knock on wood for a minute:-)

Mine did the same thing after the 686 upgrade, I would just let off the the starter if it was having trouble and hit the button again and it would work. I really loved my Raptor's starter before the 686 upgrade but after the upgrade it was almost embarising and sometimes sounded nasty:electric starter was not missed when I went to a banshee with kick starter that works every time the first time.

I think the higher comp piston wears on the one-way starter over time & once its starts acting up its just a matter of time.
I have been running an 11:1 Wiseco stock bore piston since last winter & only recently did the starter begin to act up.
Now that I got AdvMachining to do my head/valve work, I am going to drop in a JE 12:1 stock bore piston & I bet the higher comp kills the stock one-way starter real fast. I haven't heard of any complaints about the new L&A one-way but even if it couldn't handle the higher compression, I'd rather have kick a....s power than worry about a noisy starter!?

You don't need to take the valve cover off to see if the decompression mechanism is working. Take the inspection cover off the intakes and turn the motor over useing the socket as you would for adjusting the valves. The pin will soon come around and you can see if it's installed and protruding out of the cam like it is suppose to be. If it were installed wrong, it would stick out all the time and the quad would not run right when started.
Mine starts up right away everytime, no problems. It has a relatively new stock one way installed though. LA designs next time it needs one.

Put in the LA design oneway. Mine did that as well. Exactly the starter problem described. I put in the larger Yuasa YTX20BL battery and it helped but it did not cure the problem. I replaced my oneway and the problem is gone.
