2001 Rappy, Trans is workin good should I update it?
#1
I know the old saying do fix what is not broke, but if my trnny currently sems fine should I update it?
I just bought the Rappy it has less than 20 hours on it and works great. But the last thing I waqnt to happen is to waste the whole tranny. So are there usually any tell tale signs something is going wrong?
I have been to raptortranny.com and understand what needs to be done, but I am a little confused on what parts I need to buy.
What is the average cost of this update if I do the work myself?

creepr91,
Less than 20 hours that's not even broke in yet.
Mine is still going after all these years and since I have other things to ride I am going to see how long it lasts myself.
If you use reverse make sure you are very careful other than that I have had a blast on my 01 Raptor but others are not so lucky. I use mine mainly has a high speed rock road cruiser.

I wouldn't spend the money to update until yours starts to go out....you will notice it slipping out of gear when it starts to go......it will pop out of gear under load sometimes or just when under normal use when the shift forks start to go.....if it just locks up completely, then chances are you busted off a gear dog.
Seriously, though......run it stock until you have to tear into it. It's a big job!

The main thing is, once it goes out, DONT RIDE IT. When mine went out, it just took second, so I could shift from 1st to 3rd, and I rode it like this for about a month. All I can say is I was REALLY lucky. When we took it apart, we found 4 dogs or pieces of dogs laying in the bottom of the case, the oil pump drive gear (which is plastic) had 4 teeth grinded completely off of it. I would say another ride or two and my oil pump would have stopped pumping. And if you have any mechanical skill at all, save yourself hundreds of dollars and do it yourself, the raptortranny.com directions were very easy to understand and almost nothing was left out.

I lost my 3rd gear. Never locked, but when I heard a loud ticking from the head area I knew something was wrong. Pulled the case off and there was pieces of my plastic oil pump gear so I wasn't getting oil to the top end. Plastic can get in the valve train also. This is another sign of a broken gear rolling around in your case..The gears could be the least of your problems if you grind the plastic gear off the oil pump and ride to hard to long and not notice the noise as no oil is getting circulated..
