i've owned 5 quads in the last 4 years. i always break them in the way you plan on riding them. one thing i noticed though, the yfz runs hot when first breaking it in. jmo

I've always been told, break it in like you intend to ride it. I followed this theory when i got my 2000 YZ 125, and guess what, i tore it apart last spring, and all it needed was a ring, it didn't even need that, but seeing as i had it apart i figured i would change it anyways.

I dont know much about ATVs but ill tell you about cars. You want to ride it through the gears. Dont keep it at the same RPM for too long. Vary the engine speed. Let it go trought a couple temperature cycles like warming it up riding it then letting it cool down. Keep in mind your not only trying to break in the engine. Your breaking in the drivetrain as well. If im not mistaken those new engines have been run before it was even shipped out. Another ideal thing would be to change the oil once youve gone through the breakin. Helps get rid of any small metal particles that might have been left behind.

If you already have 3 hours on it, you may be too late for a proper (best) break-in according to this guy.
I learned a lot when I read this article, and this is how I broke in my YFZ with zero hours on it.

I let it come up to temp in the parking lot and then ripped on it non-stop the entire day.

Do yourself a favor, and read the article.

I have always broke my new machines in on the drag strip, and I have never had a problem yet. Just make sure you bring the engine up to "operating temp" before you go banging gears.

yes sir, the drag strip break-in is the only way to do it

When we broke our Zuki in we rode it tough. No more than 3/4 throttle and no lugging or overrevs. We have 5 hrs on it and now we are going to be going faster and faster.
