Get yourself a mid-sized sport/utility (250-300 cc) and ride it a while before going to screamers like the YZF450 or Raptor.
You need to learn how to handle different crisis situations without getting hurt before going to something that can kill you,
my friend. If you have never owned one, go slow. Too many people want the fastest for their first quad, and end up with
a lifetime of disability for their impatience.

After riding dirtbikes for years my first quad was a Worrior back in '93. It was a pretty good first quad and have no regrets learning on it.

I agree. If I wasn't experinced on quads I think I would start a little smaller than a Raptor YFZ or Banshee. There are a lot of good sport machines out there without starting with the biggest baddest fastest machines. These machines are made for experenced riders and pro racers. Too many people get hurt riding a machine that is above their skill level. There is no shame in starting with a smaller machine, and if you keep it well maintained it will hold it's value well. You can always trade up later.

You might want to look at the Z400 or KFX400. Both are good mid-range quads and they have reverse. If you go below 400cc you will be needing more power within a month or so. Some might argue the 400 is to much for a beginner, it just depends on your age, ability, and the amount of time you put on the saddle. Just be careful and know your limits, you can crash on a 300 just as easy as a 400. Plus the 400s will most likely have some additional stability.

I have a 400ex and it is a good machine, handles great, flies great - an all around good quad but it doesn't have reverse and I need more power. I bought the 300ex as a beginner bike and within 1 1/2 months I had to have more power.
