Raptor needs help!
#1
Hello everyone! I'm having a severe problem with this 2001 Raptor....Now here's what it does..It starts up and will idle perfectly but soon as you give it any gas and hold the throttle it will break up , sputter , spit , u name it..then it stalls requiring you to crank it several times again to get it to fire then it sits there and idles perfectly again until you try to get near its throttle again. I have checked ignition timing and valves to verify they were correctly adjusted according to the manual...
The bike has a White Brothers exhaust and K/N filter on it with stock air box and lid... <------Have no idea what the jetting should be?
Now here's the ?'s
1. What the heck carberator is considered the #1 and #2..?. I noticed that one of them has a bigger boot on it hosting 2 valves.
2. What should the air screws be turned out and what jetting recommended for the White Bro's pipe?
3. Could the cdi be causing this problem even though it runs?
4. What's the best way to adjust the floats? It says 13 mm but trying to obtain that setting shuts off the needle valve when the carb is sitting flat.
Any help will be appreciated... thanks!

Sounds to me like a jetting problem, or the parking break is on
1. Im not too sure, just remember which carb has a bigger main and you should be ok
2. play with it a little when you get jetting close, see where you get best results
3. probably not, sounds like its not jetted right
4. I wouldn't really worry about the floats too much, unless you feel that you problems are not the cause of jetting
Have you put new main jets in the carbs/ordered any mains for the carbs yet?
I would suggest buying a jetkit, they ussually have guides that help you jet your quad properly
What color is your spark plug? Pull it out and let us know, if it is white your quad is running a bit lean.

Make sure the springs in your slides are not missing or damaged.
Make sure there are no leaks in any of the tubes connecting to carbs -- real common and hard to see.
Make sure the parking brake is not on. Check its switch. Put it on to see if there is a change. There's a rev limiter there.
Not the cdi.
2 1/2-3 turns out should run ok, but maybe not perfect
145/150 or 150/155 would be a good start for jets.

First off, did this just happen after the exhaust mod? OR, did you buy the quad this way and have been riding it until now? The float setting is for when the floats close....so the curcuit should be closed when set correct.

its either the parking break sensor at the clutch or the clutch sensor (if the reverse sensor down by the sprocket is also bad)
My 01 does the same thing when I try and hook my clutch sensor back up, pull in the clutch and see if it does it. on mine if the clutch sensor is bypassed by pluggin the bullet connectors together down by the radiator it works fine (thinks the clutch is always pulled in)

Give us some more history. Was it running ok before? Did you remove the parking brake or change anything on the carbs? Did you ride in the snow, maybe it sucked up snow and you have water in your fuel. It's hard to believe it could be a jetting problem if all you have done is add a pipe and filter and not messed with the carbs.

A very often overlooked problem causing problems just like yours, is the dang Choke assembly.
Unscrew the plastic nut ( on the end of the choke cable) out of your carb, and pull out the plunger and
spring assembly. If that spring corrodes, and it will usually, it obstructs the plunger from operating correctly,
or the spring just breaks up in pieces, therefore the choke wont work right. I had my spring go bad
twice before I bought the newer waterproof setup. It would start fine, but you couldnt apply gas, or it would
backfire, cough, cut out etc etc. What happens is the choke is engaged when you choke it, but the spring wont
return it back when you slide the lever to off, so its ON and you dont know it. Check it to be sure anyway.
Its a Simple check before you go digging into the carbs.
Only takes a minute But be careful, the last time I put my choke back into the Carb, the plastic nut broke off and the
threads stayed in the carb. Came out very easy, but it still broke, so make sure its threading in right, and dont over tighten.
Good luck.

Excellent point, I have had the spring break and the nut broke each once, kinda exhibits the same conditions. I found mine idled horribly when either were broken when the raptor warmed up. But would caugh and carry on until full throttle where the choke doesnt matter much.
