Raptor project... banshee engine... any thoughts?
#21
Im pretty close to getting an RD engine into my warrior (Same thing as banshee engine but aircooled). Just ordered some pj34 carbs and fliters and throttle and the porting should be done shortly. There is one big problem though, the frame rails block the exhaust. Might wanna check into that on the raptor if you dont want to have to be cutting and welding the frame alot. Why a banshee engine though? why not an old 2 stroke triple, or an RZ350 engine, or TZ250 engine (VERY bad **** 250 making 65-70hp stock, also a 350 version with more power). If your gonna be different think outside the box.

I like the idea. Some people are small minded and don't look past the norm. So I think it would be great. But any two stroke in a raptor frame would be awesome. Keep me posted on what you come up with.

I think it would be awesome. I ll bet money if you do it and post some pics or videos of it when its all done all the people who said dont do it will like it. Bolt in a snowmobile motor and you ll have yourself one very fast and cool looking ride. I say go for it

I want to do the Banshee engine for a couple of reasons. There is quite a selection of aftermarket parts available. There are also quite a few engines out there for sale, and they are pretty unchanged from one year to the next. Also, they can be built up fairly easily with a cylinder kit (thinking 400cc powervalved here) and stay reliable; and it is still a Yamaha mill, which I think would be kind of cool.
Pipe fitment and engine width are two considerations that I am going to have to take a serious look at. Hopefully I could just find a junked banshee engine and test fit it in my current Raptor to see what the interference issues are to see what I'm up against. With the engine and oil tank out I think that there is quite a bit of room in there. Hopefully enough so that the only thing I have to worry about rerouting is the silencer system.

Alaska, I'm sorry that you've had to go through all of this to get some feedback on this project. As I read through I saw all of the 2 stroke and 4 stroke bashing. Then the why? section. If you ask me its obvious why.
I think that this will be a great project, as long as it works out. I believe that the Raptor frame and suspension will work good in combo w/ this motor. If you do get the rear end on this thing to hook up, this will wheelie quite easily due to the raptor's light front end. Please send me pictures when/if you get this finished. Or just let me know how progress is going. My email is mcfly877@hotmail.com I also have the urge for unique projects. I'm building a large go cart w/ a 360cc V-twin motorcycle motor. WHY? Why dont I go out and buy an odyssey or pilot? Because it will be very unique, exremly fast, and I doubt I will ever see one like it,

Just so you know, an RZ350 is a banshee engine with a powervalve and 60hp stock. Anywho, probably couldnt find one for a decent price but if your going powervalve anyway then it would prolyl be cheaper to start with an RZ motor as you could keep the stock jugs. Pipes youll have to have made. I called Jemco and they told me 350 bucks but I would have to leave it there for them to custom fit it em to the frame. Personally I think custom fit pipes made for your motor are DEFINETLY worth 350 compared the the normal generic pipes that cost more. Stock pipes go for about 5 bucks on ebay though and you wont feel bad about chopping em into a million pieces to get em to fit till you can get custom pipes or some that fit.

thanks for the feedback, guys... I've thought about the RZ engine, but not too sure about the gearing and other issues with them. What I'm leaning towards is to just buy a junked Banshee engine and build it up from scratch. That way I know every nut and bolt on it and I won't have to worry about anything. May even just have someone or a shop build one up for me. No funny fuels, just 92 octane. I do agree with the custom pipe suggestion - probably the best way to go, and it will look trick. I'm not much of a chrome guy, but I'm thinking that nickel-finished pipes would be sweet on any machine.
I would like to keep it as close to "stock" look as possible. Kind of like how my '01 Raptor is now...

I really like the idea too!!! Different is good...usually.
I have never paid much attn to how a Banshee engine mounts up. The rear motor mount/swingarm might give you some trouble. Also the width needed for the carbs/filters coud be a problem......still a cool idea.
