screwed Raptor?
#1
HELP! was riding today on a flat open road after a couple of hours of climbing and trail riding. My raptor started clattering and backfiring quite a bit, as I approached the top end of third it backfired more and started getting sluggish, I switched to fourth and it fell flat on its face after brief acceleration.
I stopped, noticed that oil (or something) had accumulated and gathered a lot of sand on the top of the skid plate, the oil filter, and the the crank had a small amount of oil residue on them. I pulled the dipstick to check fluid level and the oil was to the top of the resevoir.
SPECULATION HERE: It is almost like oil was coming back into the resevoir at a faster rate than it was coming out of the resevoir into the crank case etc. maybe explaining why too much oil in oil tank. not explaining leak (which I haven't been able to find, except maybe where the oil delivery pipe meets the case....)
Anyhow, with the noises etc I am concerned, with the rest, I am baffled.... Any opinions or advice?

Oh, I just found this in a service manual for the Wolverine
"Warning: Never remove the dipstick just after high speed operation. The heated oil could spout out, causing danger. Wait intil the oil cools down"
Same may apply to Raptor -- may explain oil level issue but not the rest of this bedlam.

I figured out the oil problem... The clutch was rebuilt under warranty by Midwest Motorsports in Hartford, Illinois, in December 2002.
The bike has been barely ridden since then (due to the fact that it was still in Illinois and I was in NM)
The idiots in the alleged 5 Star Yamaha Service department stripped the bolt that goes into the clutch cover (attaching the oil feed line)
and used YAMABOND on the crush washers to hold the show together. WTFO?
It has been too long to hold them responsible.
That was the leak, the rest of it was bonehead, I didn't take into consideration jetting issues from Illinois to NM where I am over 5,000 ft.
The oil overflow was just because the engine was hot. Due to the stripped threads I guess I have to replace the clutch cover?

If you are sure you figured out the problem then good. But i just wanted to add that if you are doing jumps and the same thing happened with the oil and it doesn't start your carboratur attachment blew off. This happenes if you do a jump and rev up in the air when you land it backs into the carb and since the raptor has a lot of power it will blow the hose right off. This is so easy to fix its just a pain in the **** trying to figure out what happened. you should also put more oil into your engine cause it prob all came out.
