Starky,
A "witch's eye" is a large hole in the sand created when a feature such as a log, rock, or curve in a dune causes wind to swirl in a circlular pattern over a spot. This vortex carries the sand away from that spot much like a small tornado and creates a hole. Witch's eyes can be very round or quite irregular. Most tend to be a couple of feet deep and a few feet across but some can be very large. The set I hit were about six feet across and about four feet deep at the center. They usually occur in sets and rarely can you find one by itself in a dune line unless caused by a foreign object such as a rock or fallen tree. Many witch's eyes occur on the back side of razor backs following a switch in the wind after the razor back has formed.
