Default raptor starter/kickstarter idea

I have been toying with the idea of taking an old starter and gutting it and making the housing into a kickstarter on the right side of the motor the kickstarter shaft would come out of the back of the starter housing and extend to the right side of the bike i know this will take alot of work to get it to work but I was just wondering if anyone else thinks it could be done. i like my electric starter but was thinking of making this just as a back up if my electric wen't out on a big trip or somewhere i couldn't get parts. since the swap would be easy if it was possible. if anyone could give me any ideas it would be great. thanks shmave

Sounds feasible to do, I'd love to see pictures of it when you're done. I've been wanting to get rid of the electric start on my bike since I got it. I just don't like relying on that little button.

To the best of my knowledge, there were no incarnations of the 660 mill (XTZ660, Scorpion, etc) that came with kickstart. So, you are forging into uncharted territory. I foresee lots of machining, part swapping, and migraines...

Best of luck...

Before getting too gung ho, make sure that the rotation of the current starter is in such a direction that you can get the kickstarter to rotate. Let's say that looking into the starter from the left side of the quad and the starter turns clockwise.. that would mean that when looking from the right side of the quad that the starter would turn counterclockwise.... Is there enough room for the kickstarter to rotate in that direction?

Just a thought.

Ride On.

I've thought about making one and I don't think it would be all that hard. Kicking it may be another story.
The rotation would make it kick to the rear so the fender would pretty much have to go.

WHat about a redesigned lower left side cover that turns the crank via a pull rope? 1 more gear and the pull rope mechanism.....piece of cake....

And if you can't get it started you can use the rope as a tow strap. I like that idea.

i hooked mine up to the tractor and (when I forgot to install the decomp pin) and I was on the grab bar jumping up and down trying to force it to get traction in 3rd gear........it wouldn't do anything but slide on the dirt.......
I finally got it to start on asphault..........

moral.......I wouldn't want to kick or pull against this damn motor
