Interesting. I have been smelling gear oil on occasion also. No sign of leaks etc. What's with that?

I've wondered about this one myself. On occasions, I've had the same experience with my 2000 Kodiak. I never found a leak or noticed the oil level changing. Since theres a vent that runs from the differential up under the fuel tank, could the smell somehow be coming up through the vent?

It's the vent.my dealer changed the position of it and bingo problem solved. the company puts it close to the top by the airbox. just reroute it so it can vent or drip some were else

You are correct, the gear oil gets pushed up that tube and all over the air box, carb.Don't know why,it just does.If you fill it up like you are supposed to(the rear diff.),you get quite a mess untill the level goes down.

Drain out all of the oil one by one and measure to see if any of the final, diff, engine oil were low. Measure then add new oil to spec. This will tell you if you have an oil leak.
