Hey,
Ive left a few posts here over the past 6 months, Im almost reqady to buy a quad. Listen: Im also a MD in alabama. A 16 year old just came in through the trauma room. He was riding his quad and ran into a power line post anchor cable. It hit him in the chest and ran up and caught his jaw. It completely lifted his skul off of his top spinal bone in his neck. Everyone thought he was braindead until he opened his eyes. He still may not make it, and his life will never be the same.
Please pray for the kid and his family.
Please be careful out there, I dont want to see any of you here in the ER.
Ill keep you updated on how how he does.

I did something similar about a year ago, my wolverine was 3 months old, and i was all nursed up from a flip that caused 2 broken ribs and a seperated shoulder, I was coming across a field against the sun I couldnt see a whole lot due to glare off my helmets visor, quads plastic and so on, there were 3 telephone polls lined up all 3 I thought had yellow cable wraps on the, turns out all did except one, I saw it when I was in 3rd gear about 3/4 throttle, All I remember was it grabing my right hand, coming across my chest and the grabbing my helmet. Some how I managed to stay on the quad, how I dont know, I looked at my right hand and between my index and middle finger i had a pretty severe gash going across it. But that was really nothing compared to the black and blue whip mark across my right chest and neck and shoulder area. I am lucky to be alive and every time I ride, I look at my hand before I put on my gloves and it reminds me to be extra alert when sight is reduced. I also bring tinted goggle lenses along, and yellow for low light evening ride. I would advice you to be extra careful and due the same. I am lucky to be alive.

I have crashed a lot from racing and hard trail riding but have never had any life threatening injuries because of the quality riding/safety gear I always wear. I have had to replace 2 helmets do to the damage they have absorbed. I have never suffered any kind of head injury. Please wear your riding gear. Also, a good tip, if you are in a new area, do a little slow riding to find any potential danger areas. This is good advice for an area you haven't been to in a while or if severe weather has been in the area. I really hope that little boy is OK.

My prayers are with the family and the young man hurt. Seriously ATV's are to be taken serious, all though we laugh and joke and say who's faster and how can we make our bikes faster and faster. The name of the game is safety. Let's all be safe and careful these are not toys that we ride.

I did something like that, just got home from school, felt like riding.. had just rained. We have a telephone pole in our pasture and there was a feed trough up on top of the hill for the cows.. and all you farmers know that when you put a feed trough somewhere, the cows all croud around it and the ground sinks in.. leaving, a mud hole.. well I had just gotten my 96 polaris 300 and back then, that was powerful (note that I was coming off a honda trx125) and i was burning off in that mud puddle but I always stopped before I hit that cord that you all are talking about.. well one time I didn't.. I ran up it.. my fronts were in the air but my rears were on the ground.. it felt like forever sitting there, I balanced it pretty good, but i kept on the brakes (my mistake) and it sat and sat.. then fell over on it's side, throwing me off, bruising my shoulder and legs pretty badly.. and scaring me.. (oh my, it's dad's four wheeler) but now, i look back on it.. and realize man, that was nothing.. I sure hope the kid makes it without brain damage.. was he wearing a helmet? any protection? i know one guy that was going down the road on his motocycle and hit a mail box.. almost took his head off... broke every bone in his head I think.. pretty bad.. well, later

Kid was wearing helmet, only thing that saved his life was dad is an EMT and was in convoy of atvs with him. Sadly enough there were two other 4 wheeler accidents with one dead 14 year old(flipped when turning- closed head trauma) and one other who I think just had broken bones. All within a few days of each other.
Last I heard the young man was still alive, but still completely paralyzed.
