Raptor Tranny - Help
#1
A friend's Raptor has locked up in 2nd gear. It's an '01 with about 300 hours on it. The quad has never been abused or raced.
From reading other posts about the Raptor's transmission problems, we're thinking that a shift fork is broken.
Yamaha was contacted by the dealer (where the bike was purchased) and Yamaha refuses to do anything - so it looks like my friend is on his own.
We're thinking about doing the repair work ourselves and have looked at the "Raptor Tranny" site for the repair procedure.
Before we jump into this project,
Why hasn't someone filed a class action suit against Yamaha? It sure makes them look responsible considering so many '01 trannys have broken and Yamaha changed the shift forks and gear ratios in '02.
Also, we heard a rumor that a recall of the 01' tranny might be in the offing. Does anyone have any info on this possibility?
Assumming we do the repair ourselves, Can you advise us where is the best place to purchase the gear set, shift forks, gaskets, etc. from?
Thanks.

For the parts just go to the dealership, yamaha genuine.
My buddy bought a brand new warrior and within 2 months we blew the transmission, and about 1 week later the timing chain came apart in the motor. so i dont know if the transmissions are the same, or different.
I know that my banshee has a good tranny..........

Buy '02 tranny parts!!!!
Do NOT buy another '01 Tranny!!
My buddy had his go (for the second time!) over Thanksgiving. Bob Craycraft had good prices on the tranny. Had our local guy do the work. . . He works out of his home shop and has only been charging $25 / hour!
You won't know if it is the shift fork or a damaged or broken gear until you get into it. Do NOT even roll it. Any movement can cause damage depending on what was broken. I won't go into detail on this but, trust me. Don't tow it, roll it or anything! Even if it isn't in gear (just to be safe.)
IF, it is only your shift fork, you should probably change the gears anyways. You are going through a lot of work so you may as well try to fix it right!
BTW, what makes you think it is only the shift fork (without getting inside it?)

We're just guessing its the shift fork based on previous posts on this same subject.
He will not install '01 gears but go with '02 gears or later.
Anyone else have a source for the parts?

Would that be true even if the quad is still rideable?
I mean, his bike will still move forward under it's own power. It's just stuck in 2nd gear.
Pulling the clutch in allows it to start but it's hard to roll around when we're just moving it.

From reading the post I thought you meant it locked up while in 2nd gear. It can still be the tranny problem, which can go bad one piece at a time, the peices break off the 4th gear wheel and either lock up the tranny altogether, bend the shift fork 1 or just fall to the bottom of the crankcase.
Does the shifter move? does it feel scratchy/notchy or other than normal?
