Default Part out engine or sell as a whole?

I could probaly contact a buddy of mine, and he would probaly be interested in the entire motor. I'm not really sure what the best route would be, but I'm sure if you got the word out, you could sell the entire motor to someone.

I would part the engine as well. I would have been interested in the bottom end a couple of weeks back.

I wouldn't part it out, I know what a motor like that costs and there is no way used parts will sell for enough to cover the original build labor.

Part it out, I wish I would have talked to you sooner on what you were doing. PM me on what you are going to do.

Even though the engine has probably more than $3k invested I doubt it sells for much more than $1,500. Too many variables when buying a used engine and lets face it...it's risky. I can count up a conservative $2k in parts

East Coast ATV sells a used '01 Raptor motor for $1500, closer to $1900 for an '02 or '03. I sold my Craycraft Signature 686 (minus SS valves) on ebay for $2175. Mine had the stock rod and the upper case saver boss was JB welded. I sold it with no carbs, intake, etc. If you sell a strong running 730 with carbs and intake, you should get a heck of a lot more than $2k. I'll bet that engine was closer to 5 large by the time you add the carbs and intake, I wouldn't sell it for a dime under $3000 if it's still strong and the clutch/one-way are good. If you sell it whole and properly tuned, you've got a much better chance of the new owner not blowing it up and blaming you.

I was asuming stock carbs since there was no mention. If the engine was something one could lay hands on it would be easier too pay more. Take your previous 686 (good sell price IMO)...what if you were a dishonest guy and the 686 was in need of a complete teardown? What if it had too much piston / cylinder wall clearance and the entire engine gets lunched? I am not saying you would ever do something like that...but there are guys out there that do it every day. The buyer would have been screwed. If the engine is parted the new owner sees what he has and has the option of examining everything....and it's clearly his fault if the engine grenades. East Coast ATV is outrageous on all of their prices. Even they are not positive their stuff is in good working order....engine(s) wise anyway. Just playing devils advocate gentlemen....

Here's the thing. The motor was torn down a few months ago for a rebuild. In order to make it a complete engine again, it needs new piston, etc etc. So I would have to put money into it to make it run again.

It's good to have a devil's advocate in the discussion. I don't think like a dishonest person so I didn't think about someone intentionally misrepresenting the condition of an item to get a few more $$. I've watched it happen but it's not for me, reputation is more important in the long run. I got a good price for my 686 because all my ebay feedback says "honest description" or "condition better than described", it pays to be honest. I know East Coast ATV charges too much but have you ever tried to find a Raptor motor? East Coast ATV sells every single one they get:-)

Anyhow, if the 730 needs rebuilt, you might as well part it out. There is probably a good market for a ported head with big valves, a balanced crank/Ti rod, case/jug machined for 105mm, and cryo treated 02 gears. Doubt you'll get much for a used cam. Carbs and intake should be worth darn near what you have in them.
