Okay couple thoughts...
1. the banshee I have started knocking very soon after I bought it...and the water pump was to blame!! You need to change it...even if it is okay. They make one thats not plastic and it flows alot better!!! Michigan winters seem to be to cold for them!! The coolant in mine iced up and I think thats what broke it...but anyways. Do something quick the crank had to be replaced on mine... and it wasn't cheap, (thanks to yamaha for paying though!)
2. Gas in michigan IS mixed differently in the winter then in the summer. So if you last filled in summer that may be causing some of your problems.
But my suggestion: replace the water pump for sure, and run different coolant mixtures in summer and winter... and you may want to look into taking it to a good shop to get there opinion my shee still backfires and fowls out plugs alot!!

Hmmmm, Id say you probably left your gas on while it sat, did you? Take off the carbs, clean them out real good and make sure the floats are both good. After that I'd change the plugs again, just to make sure the cyls are cleaned out good. Also, did you put new gas in it?
