Weird 686 problem
#1
Trying to jet it here guys and I am having a bad time. I checked my float level and set it just above the mating surface. My pipes glow red after idling for awhile. Went to a 25 pilot and have the mixture screws 3.5 turns out each. I am running 185/190 mains with dyno jet needls in the 3 rd from bottom clip. It kind of stumbles when cruising at half throttle. Havent tried opening the throttle yet. Any suggestions?? I dont have the money now for FCR's right now, what about modding the stock carbs? Thanks

I had the exact same set up but I used 185/187.5 mains, 27.5 pilots, 2 3/4 turns left carb. 3 1/4 turns right carb. Hope this helps. I would suggest doing a dual feed conversion on the stock carbs because you will be running lean no matter how much jet you put in the carbs.

I am not using the DJ jets, I am using the Mikuni's. I am using the DJ needles because I seen on this forum that they have helped other people with this midrange problem. So, maybe I need to go to the 27.5 pilots

if you are using mikuni mains with a DJ needle.......you are probably rich now.....185/190 seems awful big
I ran 170/175 DJ mains with dj needles......and dj mains are smaller than mikuni
btw.......I ran 27.5 pilots........

How do you do the dual feed? I have noticed that if I get on it hard and let it idle, it idles real low and then picks up finally. Any other carb mods out there that I can do?? I will try your setup first, where are your needles set at and are you running the stock needles ??

Ahh yes...mixing dynojet and makuni! Thats how mine is setup! I was running 160/165 mains but recently bumped it up to 165/170 so it will run better at the coast. The needle is set at the third notch I believe and the pilot is stock size but I have not idea what the screw is set to. This jetting was done on a dyno and set for best performance so if you jet your carbs close to this it should give you a good starting point! I have heard that jetting with the stock carb's on a 686 is a pain in the @$$. I would have had the same problem as you next week if I hadn't gotten my 35's from a good friend. I would definetly trust Ernie's set up and atleast give it a try and see if it help's your problem.
Everyone has said it's a pain to get it right, and you might even contact Bob Craycraft about modd'ing your stock carb's to get more gas flow.
