Default 98 warrior w/ problems

hey guys i just bought a 98 warrior for 800$. The quad is in pretty good shape and runs decent. The deal is that the guy i bought this from doesnt know much about it. I rode it for about an hour and the starter clutch went out so 244$ later ive been able to ride it a little now and it doesnt seem to run as smootly as it should. If the throttle is mashed it seems to bog out and when it does catch up it acts as though it hits a rev limiter. The rev limiter type of problem happens throughout all gears but if you shift up it seems fine as long as your accelerating but as soon as you level off to just ride it sputters. I think it may be a jet problem as it has an FMF megamax exhaust and supposedly a jet kit. What jets should this have put in it and is there a way i can find out what jets are in it now. Sorry for the long post but any help is appreciated.

I rode around again 2night and the bogging down problem seems to be occuring more often now and getting worse but at about 3/4 throttle now as well as full. Anyone have any other ideas?

I'd check the jetting...sounds like it might be running lean.

i think that it could be a jetting problem but is there a way to check what jets are in it? like i said i dont know and the previous owner doesnt know. Also the quad wouldnt run if the CDI box was bad would it?

I am still learning about my warrior. Here is something simple. Warriors have a horrible parking brake. You could have it on and not know it. If it is on (small chrome lever pulled back) it will try to choke the engine out and make it run terrible.

I would think your jetting is off. If your quad takes a long time to kick in when you punch the throttle your needle is probably rich. One way to test this is rev the quad up past 1/2 up to 3/4 throttle while parked and hold something white under the exhaust that's coming out of the pipe and looking for any black smoke or a strong fuel smell. Be sure to have the engine warmed up first before any testing however! The quad will maybe even want to stall if it's really rich, and the throttle is really punched hard. If the quad is lean it just simply won't rev high and backfire a lot. You could also hear the air popping through the air filter. Don't try it with the lid off if it is still bolted on in the first place, taking it off will make it much leaner. The engine will also sound more like tinny sounding explosions are taking place instead of a smooth combustion. If the parking brake was still engaged slightly it wouldn't even let you rev it up, since it will only make a muffled bam noise about two or three times a second. If the needle is your problem use a Clymer book or the official yama book to adjust the needle by lowering it (leaner) or raising it (richer). If the needle can't make the adjustment (if it is the problem), than you probably will have to change the main jet. Very cold air temperatures can sometimes make your jetting lean also, and vise versa hot air will be richer do to air densities. Check the plug for fouling too, this may also give you clues to what's going on.

At any time it is a good idea to keep the engine cooler. Overheating will damage your cylinder by causing aluminum deposits and frying your piston like an egg. It isn't really necessary unless you ride very hard or do hill climbing where you make an air cooled engine work extra hard at lower speeds. Last summer I could feel heat pour off the way I was riding!!! This mod will greatly help increase time between rebuilds, and definately take a burden off the clutch. Many oils will also start breaking down just slightly over the engines running temp. The cooler I chose for my Warrior supposively drops the temp by 40 degrees, but I think it's more from the way the air flows. When the cooler was installed on my warrior the clutch cover was cool enough to hold your hand on it even after a hard ride, definately a good sign. I would recommend oil coolers if you ride in the summer in high temps or have modded the engine in any way (especially bore jobs when the cylinder walls are thinner than stock and compression is raised significantly). Keeping the engine cool is definately a biggy in racing. Those guys especially don't seem to like it when their radiators get caked in mud!!!
