JE piston problems??

It may very well be detonation but this is a very loud metallic slap! I really can't say if it would have happened with the 110 octane, the plug was way way too white (scary white!). Maybe 100 octane would have been the ticket, IDK...
oh yea, and the first time it made this noise the valve clearance was at .006, I moved it back to .004 after the noise appeared

It sonds like detonation to me also. I'd try some 100 if you put it back together with that piston.

Did your noise stop out the pipe when you adjusted them to .004?

The pictire looks like it was detonating also but the right side is hard to tell if it's shinny from the flash. But detonation will look like it was peppered and usually have an odd look on the top of the piston above the top ring. Does the plug have a peppered look to it also?
I would also put in a plug one or two heat ranges colder with .005" less gap.

Thanks for the help guys, I think you may be right. I already have it apart so I ordered a Wiesco piston for it on sat, it has half a point less squeeze and I'm hoping for a dome with no sharp ridges. If I had more time to play with it I would take a file and some emery clotch to the top of the JE to see if that would help. But the weather is getting good and we don't want to miss any ride time because I am trying to dial this thing in, so I'll keep you guys posted as to what happens just swapping the pistons and if it does run better without any issues I will cuss JE from now on.
