filters with no airbox

Turbo 33, you and your machine look like something out of a James Bond flick. I had a buddy who took out his airbox and his engine was full of very fine sand and dust, even through his filter. The guy does maintenance on the filter. Had it rebuilt by Jerry Hall Racing and they insisted that he put the lower box back on, too much contaminent hitting the filter at the dunes and very dusty desert conditions. $2k later he is back on the trail.
Food for thought.
I took the lid off of my rappy airbox. Got a K&N with outwear with billet manifold adapter, no probs so far.

I have to disagree with running a box with no lid is better. That's the set up I use to use until a trip to the dunes on a windy day. We stopped to take a break after a run thru the dunes and I checked my filter. The box had a 1/2" of sand in the bottom doing a shake n bake job on the filter, assuring every bit of sand got on and thru the filter. I'm very annal about my quad and have never found a trace of sand or dust getting through with my current set up, if I did it would be in the garbage.

Turbo's quad is in a class by it's self and props to him on a great looking quad. I agree with Sixsixt I found more crud in the box that stays next to the filter. The filter stays cleaner with no box.

Yes the EHS will keep it cleaner from bigger particals, but I think it sifts the fine particals through into the air box swirling around the filter and is also more restrictive. Depends on what kind of riding you plan to do. JMO
