Default yamaha bad brakes

i have a big bear and the brakes never work on it. i put new pads in the back and adjusted them. well the first mud puddle i went through they didn't work. so i adjust them again and i just keeps happening. thefront brakes are the same way. i was thinking about putting disk brakes in. the newer big bear have disk brakes would they work? or should i use some from the wolverine.

Most likley the newer style disc's would work, as long as they didn't change too muhc in the front end. There is probably a kit you can buy to do the change over.

hondaguy,

The new Big Bears still have drum brakes in the rear. Sounds like you are getting contamination in the drums, does your drums use O-rings? AlaskaBoy.

hondaguy,

I was not aware that yours had came with rear disc brakes. I wonder why thy went to a drum later.

I had the same problem with my King Quad and after replacing the seals with a new set they would last longer, at least the fronts. I never use the back ones so I do not bother putting new shoes on it. I found the local rubber hose dealer had them in stock and I took him my old one and he matched it up and charged me 3 bucks for 5 of them. My seals had gotten cracked and also had some flat spots allowing water and sand to get in there and the shoes would wear realy fast.

But as you stated you do not want to replace them because it is 13 years old and just want better brakes, well good luck in your venture.

AlaskaBoy.
