'03 raptor one way problems
#1
I am almost positive that my one way is going out, when i press the start button it turns over but the starter doesnt engage. and when it does engage it makes a bad grinding sound and when it starts sometimes in nuetral it makes a bad grinding noise from inside the left case. Any comments on if i should get another oem one way or an L@A, and any thing i should watch out for when i crack open the case?

Yes, my next one (which maybe soon) will be the L&A one. I am on my second OEM right now.
If I were you, do a search on the one way here or go to raptortranny.com and find out how to do this job.
Have fun doing it and watch out for that flywheel when it breaks loose!!

My L&A should be here friday and will put it together on Saturday. Take the advice on the gear puller and buy the longer bolts, you will need them to pop the gear. Found that out for sure doing a friend of mines one way. No other surprises.

One more thing, dont cheap out and skip swapping out the idler gear, that shaft should have significant chatter marks on it to warrant this part going to the scrap heap too. The whole kit cost me $255 from ripperracing.com

I noticed the new idler gear had no needle bearings like the one in my 01. Strange they change to a bronze bearing.
As far as Raptortrany's guide:
I used the sears puller with the regular bolts since it was near impossible to find that size metric bolt around my town. Regular bolts with the puller and washers worked fine.
I used a propane torch to heat up the allen bolts on the old one-way before I removed them to soften the thread lock. I couldn't take the chance of stripping those.
I found it very useless to use the strapwrench to hold the crank while torquing the flywheel bolt. It slipped very easily. I even had someone stand on the brake and put it in gear but the clutch wouldn't hold it. (probably because I drained the oil?) I had very strong buddy use a oversized slotted screwdriver jarred into one of the teeth on the gear and against a protrusion on the block to hold that sucker while I torqued it. That was the hardest part.
