wolvy sputtering @ high rpm's in 3rd-5th gear
help motorheads! this last weekend i was ridin on a gravel road and wanted to dust my buddies' 300EX... i took off and all was good (had him by 4ft or so) until i hit 3rd and my baby started spuddering/cutting out. i have no idea what the problem could be......also, after the ride, when i was putting it on the trailer, i noticed oil dripping from the carb/upper cylender area. but it wasnt smoking out of the pipe so its probably not blown rings...any ideas?

Does the oily residue smells like gear oil and is above the rubber splash protection near the air box snorkel....if this is the case you have probably overfilled your front and/or rear diff. It may have sucked some into the intake causing your miss. Pull your airbox cover and see if the airbox is full of oil.

well i dont know the wolvie my raptor had one and it had issues where just out of the blue it would bog and i couldnt ride it cause the rev limiter was kicking in but i over rid it and fixed it and now it runs fine im just wondering if this could be your problem check your needles an make sure they arent sticking and clean your carbs.. and air filter thats what i would do.

Clean the airbox and filter. If it isn't making any funny noises then don't worry about internal engine damage. Disconnect the 2 diff. breather hoses on the brake side of the snorkel, and the crankcase breather vent from the shifter side of the snorkel (tie them up so they don't drag). Take it for a quick but hard reving ride through the gears and see what happens.

One thing I have seen out of a few Wolvys is the carb joint leaking causing a similar problem. The carb joint (the rubber intake from the carb to engine) blows sometimes due to age and or the parking brake rev limiter causing misfiring. An east check of this is to spray starting fluid just around the carb joint. If ir reves up you know that the starting fluid is being sucked in and the joint is leaking.
ps I have also had the gear oil problem before but never enough to cause oil to be sucked into my engine. Hope this helps ya.
