I have a friend who suggested that removing the fiberglass packing from the FMF PowerCore 2 silencers on my Banshee will give it a little more power. Is there any truth to this, or will it just make it louder? Even worse, will it rob it of any power?

No but you should repack the pipes when the pipes start to sound louder. 2 strokes work off of pipe compression. If you take the packing out it will run like ish.

From all the stuff I read on FMF pipes (we're an FMF authorized dealer, we buy direct from FMF) the packing is made of steel wool not fiberglass. FMF is quite a company all they build is pipes and have made a real science of it. I doubt removing the packing is going to improve anything, if it did FMF would be doing it themselves.

Steel wool? I have never seen/heard of it in a silencer.I used 3 sets of FMF pipes,2 on a banshee and 1 on a 250r.The cheap stuff they put into the silencers blows out in 5 rides.Paul Turner Fat boys are the same way, although they are built much better than FMF.Toomey and CT packing lasts 10x longer.I had Toomeys that never got rebuilt for over 2 years, when I took them apart to repack 75% of it was still white and clean! You can buy the packing from Toomey and it is expensive, but it lasts forever. This is just my personal experience.I have not used FMF since 1992,maybe they changed things.OK back to the topic.Remove burnt out packing and REPLACE it with fresh stuff.Your machine will run/sound the best that way.Your buddy is wrong!
