If there is oil or any liquid seaping around the top end then you have low compression.
A toasted piston can look hundreds of different ways, from gouges in the sidwalls, holes, cracks..etc. If the piston is intact...the onlyway is to measure it with some calipers. Then measure the bore of the cylinder....then check the rings and end gap.
But like I said above....compression test.
