my 2 cents...
I have ported before and have had really good results...
BUT this is what I would do for $1500 (this is what I did with my fist build)
Sent it to Craycraft!!! or a reputable builder if you want it to perform exeptional.
Need great port work, that is the key. Changing pipes and cams are easy future mods.
Start with porting... then decide on pipe, cam, and piston and you will be fine.
porting, porting, porting... sorry, did I mention that... My dad's sparks bike has $1200 in the motor and took fourth place at 4SWIII in the modified class Only sparks beat him... in that class...

You'd have to have frickin rocks in your head if you ported your motor as a first mod!
Put on the ad ons first as most would recommend, jetting, pipe, filter, cam, piston, gearing, etc.
My experience would say that LOTS of the people who let 'pros' hack at thier motor end up with grief.

Quick, cheap, NOS. Yea, sure your engine's life span will be nil, but you'll be fast long enough to beat that shee and yfz.
Disclaimer: this post was in no way to be taken as a serious option and I hold no responsibility for loss of limbs or life due to the following of this advice.
That said, port, pipe, filter, and jet. Porting your head will only let the air/fuel mix and exhaust flow more smothly in and out of your engine. I have never seen evidence that it lowers the reliability of an engine like boring does. Mostly, porting is just taking out the cast marks and widening the exhaust port out, usually, to match the header.
On that tangent, does anybody know if any porting company will do match porting if you send them your head pipe as well?

Catalac - porting, porting, porting, sorry bro, but $1500 takes care of the whole engine. Why do bolt on when you can do the whole thing??????????
I have NEVER heard of ONE person sayd that they regret sending their motor to Craycraft, sparks, or kenz!!!!!!!!!!
do all the bolt ons and stay in the back of the pack... sure we have three raptors with bolt ons, no need to go fast... and they are in teh back of the pack...
i'll end again with porting, porting, porting!!!
