Default question about pickup coil on warrior

my 98 warrior has had a popping and backfiring sound ever since i bought it. It runs fine it just doesnt want to stay at one speed when driving it purges & jumps. im pretty sure the jetting is correct since the plug is a good color. My local yamaha repair man said that he has replaced several pickup coils on the warrior this year and it has solved this. I can get just the pickup coil for 40$ from rickystator instead of buying the whole stator so im prolly going to do that unless someone else has a different idea...also it doesnt have a parking brake so its not that does this sound like the problem??
