Hi all,
I need help with some diagnosis on my friends warrior. He is about as sharp as a bowling ball.
I believe he is the cause of this engine running so poorly.
I loaned him the money to buy this 99 warrior off this dude on Ebay. We picked it up and it had a starting problem where the little fingers on the flywheel starter mechanisim weren't working any more.
So we replaced that and it fixed it.
I tell him to change the oil due to all the metal that probably is in the sump by now.
3 weeks and 3 rides later, I ask him if he changed the oil and he says yes.
I ask if there were any metal filings in the oil and he says no.
2 weeks later, the engine develops a hesitation off-idle and becomes increasingly hard to start.
next day, all spark fails.
Replaced the pickup with a good one and spark returned. Plug has a nice purple spark now.
Off-idle hesitation is horrible now and will stall the engine if gased too quickly. Throttle must be applied REAL slow.
Some fuel spray is seen comming out of the mouth of the carb when goosed from idle.
Took carb off and completely went through it.
Everything is spotless. Carb slide/block is a little loose in the carb, but I'd say it's standard.
Here's the key part to this story,
So I look under the quad to see something and notice the oil drain bolt.
It's kinda rounded off and not looking too good.
So I tell my friend that I'm gona do a quick oil change on it while he was checking the electricals.
Turns out, the oil was never changed. The bolt was frozen in there from the previous owner.
I had to chip the drain plug out and order a new one.
When I took the plug out, a bunch of metal flakes came out with the oil.
I then turned my attention to the oil filter. I took it out to find that it was COMPLETELY plugged up with metal filings AND torn. The oil pressure must have ripped the element due to it being plugged up.
So, now I'm about to swing on this idiot for saying he changed the oil. He says since he had the side cover off to change the pickup, that was just as good as changing the oil. ARRRRRRRGGGHH!!!!!
What are the odds that what I described above are symptoms of a worn out cam?
any help would be appreciated....
Thanks,
Mike

What is the odds he is going to remember you loaned him money to buy the quad?? Cant believe
the guy lied to you about the oil change, what a tool. I think its more than a worn cam if you have that
many shavings in the sump and oil filter. Good luck getting your money. Youre a good friend for helping
him out.

Yea, I'm about sick to my stomach with this dude. He's about the only person I know to ever destroy a warrior engine.
So far, I replaced the:
CDI
ignition pickup
Carb is spotless clean. Slide valve is a little sloppy in the carb but needle and emulsion tube are good.
This thing has a horrible off-idle stumble. It also doesn't even want to start up. You should be able to spray gas or starting fluid in any engine's carb and get it to fire instantly.
This thing just cranks and cranks.
Purple spark,
good gas,
right jets in the carb,
I'm stumped.
Either the cam is off a tooth or two, or timing or something.
It has 120 psi of compression too.
I'm stumped.
I just might take it back from my friend and tell him to go get a new one or something.

hehe, are you sure its not on choke and are you sure he hasnt messed with the idle mixture screw? While your at it check the plunger for the accelerator pump. After my warrior started spitting up metal chunks my oil pump died, flushed the motor with diesel for a while and put in a new oil pump which lasted for abour 5 hours. If they are spitting up metal you might as well just split the cases and clean her all out or expcet to lose the oil pump and melt the cam/rockers, even the crank if you run it long enough like that.
