Default intake length

Has anyone tried changing the length of the intake tubes from the head to the carb.. I've been thinking about mustang 5.0 intakes and the longer the runner, the lower the hp, higher the torque. Shorter, high rpm hp.. I've been thinking about using some aluminum piping and trying different lengths to see where the power moves, response from carbs, etc.. Aside from clearance issues, any reason this wouldn't workor make a difference?

whell, basically cause a mustang is fuel injectred and rappy is carb'd. Look at the early mustangs with carbs, they sit right on the lower intake, closely. it wont really matter, just leave it alone

Thats a good answer.. those long intakes, are meant for air only. Gas will collect on the walls, and it will run erracticly. Also theres a timing, or harmonic componet, that will be missing because yours is a single cyclinder, and those motors have a common plenum, with 8 pulses per two crank revs vs your motor's one.

Ive heard you can fine tune the hp like that, not going to be a major gain though. Remember high rise intakes and such? I know on two strokes we try to get the carbs as close to the cylinder as possible.

actually the final length itself does not make much of a difference as compared to how much length is used to make the transfer from the size of the carb flange to the primary intake tube size.

It is done with carb'd intakes too. Look at the difference between a edelbrock torquer and a victor jr. Or just talk to the people that hogged out their edelbrock raptor carb intake. Scrambler, do you mean a taper from the carb to the intake port? Hmm...

i mean the taper from the carb flange to the primary intake tube size. I had a long talk with arlan lehman (founder or LRD) on this very subject and he has done a lot experimenting on this aspect and has been able to change the power curve slightly with this.
