I've got a Kodiak that is boiling the battery. Is this most likely a stator or a voltage regulator problem? I have tested the voltage and it seems to be fine but have not gone any futher with it. Though someone with kodiak experience might save me some work.

What year kodiak? Have you put a digital voltmeter on it? Sitting there, with the motor and key off, it should be more than 12 volts, 12.8 is fully charged at 68 degrees. When its idleing, it may be a bit less, but by 3000 rpms, it should be 14 volts, but not more. Turning on the lights should drop the voltage some.
If its higher than 14 volts, then you could ohm out the stator.

 

Thanx for the input. I forgot to mention I have been an ASE Master Technician for over 25 years and know how to test the system, I'm just being LAZY!! I thought maybe these things might have a common problem. I used to race old GS1100 suzukis and they used to eat rectifiers. We used to adapt the cheaper Honda units. I just bought it with this problem and I'm not near it right now to tell you what year but it is the automatic.

As far as I know, there arent any known problems with the charging system. But its different than a car alternator. These dont have a field wire, so they put out max, all the time. The alternator doesnt cycle on and off, according to demand.
