I have a '94 Warrior that has been acting up for the past couple of months. It is very difficult to start. Once it gets going it seems to be fine. I was on a long ride the other day and when i shut the machine off it wouldn't start. I pulled the plug out and the spark was weak. I put in a new plug and the quad ran well enough to get me home. When I shut it off it wouldn't start. I pulled out the plug and there was no spark at all. i put a brand new plug in, still no spark. So i took the quad apart and checked the ignition coil and all the wiring and it seemed fine. I took the machine to the dealer and he ripped it apart. He told me my stator coil was shot. He pulled it out on the counter and showed me with his ammeter that the resistance in the coils was way lower than it should be. (He showed me the yamaha specs.) So i figured that must be it and I went ahead and ordered the part for about $400. He told me if he orders it its mine and I can't return it. Now I am wondering if this is a parking brake problem. I removed the parking brake when I bought the machine last year and put a block off plate on. Does the parking brake affect spark? Could this be my problem? Where is the parking brake connected to the electrical system? Is there something I should have done when I took the brake cable off? The reason I think it may not be the stator is that the dealer told me by battery shouldn't have been charging, but that has never been a problem. I just don't want to dole out $400 bucks for a part I don't need! Please respond, I am in a panic! Any help will be a life saver! Thank You.

Well, I won't pretend to solve your problem, but I may eliminate one source of it for you. After a nasty cut on my forearm from the parking brake lock lever, I simply removed the entire system, cable & all. No block off or any thing else. It's been about a year & 1/2 with no effect whatsoever.
If you have doubts about the dealer's diagnosis, I think I'd get a 2nd opinion if it isn't too late, especially if he can't guarantee that the stator is the problem . I would also check with Ricky Stator to see what he'd charge to rebuild your unit. He usually runs an an ad on the Connection home page & also in the classified in DW.
