Default Newbie question about timing

Hello, I am new here. I bought my son an 87 Yamaha yfm 80 for cheap. I have not been able to start it at all. I have rebuilt the carb and replaced the plug and put in a new battery. Even if I shoot starting fluid into it, It will not even sputter. It has good compression and spark.

I have hooked up my timing light to it and pulled the "timing cover" off while I crank it over. There appears to be a timing mark that is pointing to the very top of the cylinder head (front of atv) when I try to start it. The PO said that it ran fine when he parked it last year, but I do not know how reliable that info is.

Does anyone have any ideas or know wher I can get info online to help me make sure the timing is ok?? I have been building cars and trucks for many years, but I am puzzled when it comes to ATV's and motorcycles. Thanks in advance........................................... .

Bob

take the carb off and clean it well, and while your in there check all the lines and make sure gas is flowing correctly. Also it don't hurt to clean the air filter, maybe just check it if you haven't cause mice love to get in there and make homes good luck!
