Default 2 Stroke Tranny Oil

I was chatting with some old timers that raced and they claim they run standard Tranmission oil in the crankcase, says it works great, works well with the clutch, low drag, just change it every few trips, has any one else used Plain old Tranny fluild?

WE use good ol Castrol 30W in our blaster, we have used gear oil when we had nothing else up camping & it seemed to be fine!! It's thicker so thats maybe a good thing!
