ok guys just got this machine and want to know a little about it. i know it is air cooled with a fan but how hard do you have to ride it to get the fan to kick on? and do they always put out that heat to the legs and what can i do for that? come on now people, no machine bashng, just some honest answers. and have they always had 2 brake levers on them. i really like the power although down in speed but hey at 47, i'm cool with less speed. always had 2 stroke and this 4 stroke will take some getting use to. any comments would be appreciated. thanks. Lester

high lifter has a heat fighter kit for the grizzly and it help's a little. the clutch kit they sell is a nice addition to the bike as well it take's over half of the vibration out of the motor and that made a big difference to mine. that's my 2 cent's

I'm not too sure about a 98, I have a 01, but the fan comes on from time to time almost everytime I ride it. I ride it pretty hard alot of times. But then again I've only had it since late June so all my riding has been in 80-90 degrees. I'll have to wait till winter to see how often it comes on in the cold wet weather As far as the heat from the engine goes I'm not to sure what you mean by too much heat on your legs. Mine gets warm enough to feel it, but I've never thought of it as being too much. So I don't know what a guy can do about it. Mine also has 2 hand brakes, one for the front and one for the rear. I almost never use the hand brake for the rear, I really only use it to lock the rear brake for transport. I always use the foot brake for the rear. It won't have the top end that a 2-stroke has, but it pulls real hard of the bottom, and the mid-range power is unbeatable! You will also learn to love the superior engine braking. It works on all 4 wheels(if your in 4 wheel drive) both forward and reverse.

The 98's had a problem with heating your leg up, so the 99's and later had a heat shield installed as a change. I believe that you can go to a Yamaha dealer and buy a heat shield and make it like the later models. The fan won't come on all that often if the heat shield isn't installed, but it will come on more often with the shield installed. Yours should also have a ride adjust lever at the left rear of the seat, the later models don't have that lever.

I went riding on Tuesday, took a day off work to go goof off. I was riding with tennis shoes on, since there isn't really any mud anywhere to speak of. Normally I wear knee high rubber boots. I did notice what you were saying about the engine heat. I've never really noticed it with boots on, but with tennis shoes on it got pretty warm. Was watching the oil cooler fan more closely also. I never actually saw it come on while I was riding. If I stopped for a short time and then turned the key back on it would come on for a short time. Which is what I've always noticed in the past. Its kinda hard to see through that little opening where the handle bars come through.
