The proper way to check yer oil is in your owners manual. Im pretty sure with all atv's, you have to screw in the dipstick all the way. Better when the atv is a little cool. don't check it when its hot cause the oil has to drain off of all the parts in the motor. When you check it hot, the oil is all over inside the engine and of course its gonna be low. Don't over fill it cause then it will blow oil back into the aircleaner and carb and cause it to smoke really bad out the exhaust. I know with the V-Twin Kawis, if you overfill it, it WILL smoke. I did that once on mine cause I didnt screw in the dipstick, just laid it in the hole. Thats wrong. I know all Kawi atvs, you check with the dipstick all the way screwed in.

ON my Yamaha you dont screw it back in. This is from the owners manual. If you dont have one go to Yamaha web site and download one
