Default Fill'er up?

OK, this is my first atv and I'm no engineer but I thought this was strange. Dealer is going over all the features on my new '05 Grizzly with me. He wheels a gas cart into the showroom (it was cold outside). He fills the tank about 4/5ths. Tells me no more than that. When I ride today, understandably, gas guage shows 3 bottom bars black, top bar white.

Now I know the Grizzly isn't the best on gas (saw someone post about 8 mpg - YIKES) but it does have a 5.3 gal tank.

Grizzly owners, 2 questions:
1) Can I fill this tank up (to say, 9/10ths?) and if not, why not? (PLEASE tell me this is NOT about the old "gas boiling" problem or was that Honda?)
2) Approx how many miles can I get on this tank, trail riding, 2 WD hi range only?

Thanks!

I would have to agree it was just the dealer being cheap. There was talk about the 2000 grizzly 600 having problems, then they fixed it the next year. I always fill my wolverine to the top and never have had a problem.
