Default Choke causes smoking

On my 2001 warrior when I start it in cold weather with the choke all the way out my exhaust smokes like a 2 stroke, but when I release the choke the smoking goes away. Is this a normal thing, or something that should be fixed?

I think it is normal, because the choke gives it extra gas to help it start, and when the mixture is high it burns smokey like that.

The smoke is a bluish grey, but it has an unusual smell. It doesn't smell like oil or gas to me, but i guess it could be either.

Of course it's going to smoke with the choke on, thats how it works. The extra gas is going to create a rich condition, and with that comes exessive smoke. A good way to tell if your choke is properly working is to pull it on when your bike is completly warmed up. If it's working the bike should stall, if it dosn't then you either have a defective choke or a real lean condition.
